“The Core of Baseball” - Tyler Sherman Looks to Soak In the Summer

GRIFFITH, Ind. – With league play already underway in Crown Point, the Generals are set to open the season against the Corndogs on Tuesday. While most players in the league were raised in the upper Midwest, outfielder Tyler Sherman grew up idolizing the Cardinals in his hometown of St. Louis and is “still adjusting” to living life in the Chicago area.

Sherman is the only Generals player born before 2000 (which “terrifies” him and makes him feel older than he really is), entering his sixth and final year of eligibility at Concordia University Chicago. He’s currently a graduate student pursuing a Master of Business Administration degree.

Tyler heard “nothing but good things” about the Northern League and followed some of his Cougar teammates to Griffith.

"Summer ball has always been about returning to the core of baseball: a game,” he said. “I've been blessed with the opportunity to play college baseball for the last five years of my life, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. Still, there's nothing better than pulling up to a baseball field on a cool summer day and playing the game we love with a group of talented and fun guys.”

Tyler is one of four Concordia University players on the Generals roster this summer, the other three being Nick Rensberger, David Deimling and Eliot Higgins. Sherman couldn’t say enough about his teammates, stating that “these are dudes that are irreplaceable not only for what they do on the field but for the unique energy they bring to every element of the day. They are what defines a program and its culture. They're easily some of my favorite teammates I have ever had. They're absolutely hilarious, and being able to play with them means there won't be too many times when I'm not dying from laughter this summer. These guys are what make the game fun, and I'm very lucky to get to spend this summer with all of them.”

Tyler has a passion for all levels of the game, especially for his hometown St. Louis Cardinals. He idolized Albert Pujols, who hit his 700th career home run in September. Tyler reminisced on an eventful leadup to the milestone, saying, "My teammates this past year heard all about homerun number 700 and the buildup that came with it. I was actually concussed when he hit 699 and 700 and gave myself one of the worst migraines I've ever experienced from yelling and screaming; totally worth it though.”

Sherman’s tales don’t end there. His crowning achievement this season came in a series of prolific events. In a 9-3 win over the Benedictine Eagles on April 29, Tyler took a “perfect sit” into the ninth inning, came off the bench, and belted a two-run homer for his lone hit of the season. That story alone is worthy of its own article.

Tyler will be one of five full-fledged outfielders on the Griffith roster this season.
