The Generals get run-ruled in Hammond06/10/2024 8:42 PM - The Griffith Generals fall to 1-5 on the year, after Monday night's 14-4 loss to the Hammond Vikings, their fifth in a row. "Some of these games have been close," said Generals manager Amir Wright, "and they get out of hand because we're not keeping the pressure." The Vikings struck first in the third inning on a double from Nicolas Mangano that put Hammond up 1-0. The Generals tied the ballgame in the next half-inning when Ayden Elixson scored on a passed ball.
Hammond quickly struck back with two runs on a productive groundout from Miles Cvelbar and a passed ball, giving the Vikings a 3-1 lead.
The Vikings loaded the bases in three straight innings in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Hammond's most successful inning was the seventh which initiated the early ending due to the run-rule. The Vikings had five runs on three hits, including a Charles Bergin double that scored two.
Ian Clark started on the mound for the Generals and took the loss over five innings, striking out five and walking three.
"Ian competed," said Wright, "he was around the 80 pitch mark, and with it being the first two weeks of summer ball, I didn't want to extend him too much."
Trey Pitcock was the starter for the Vikings and threw all seven innings, giving up four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
Yashion Boswell led the offensive staff for the Generals with two runs batted in. Boswell went 3-for-3 at the plate. Cole Hockman also had two hits.
"Today was better [at the plate]," said Wright, "but we still struggle with runners in scoring position." The Generals are hitting .196 with runners in scoring position on the year.
Griffith will return to Hammond on Tuesday for another matchup with the Vikings at 5 p.m. at Hessville Park.
"It's a new day tomorrow," said Wright.
