Cayden Gothrup leads the Generals to a win over the Oilmen

06/30/2024 8:27 PM -
The Griffith Generals' four runs were enough behind Cayden Gothrup's stellar performance on the mound to topple the Northwest Indiana Oilmen.

Braylon Holland secured the 4-0 win with two shutout innings, inducing a Jake LaVine pop-out for the final out.

The Generals scored all four runs in the second inning as Cole Deardorff struggled on the mound for the Oilmen. Deardorff walked in three of the inning's four runs. The fourth run was scored off of a Yashion Boswell single to rightfield.

"[Deardorff] was a little bit wild and we took what he gave us," said Generals manager Amir Wright, "In [the second inning] we were in deep 3-2 counts."

Gothrup struck out eight batters over seven innings of shutout baseball while only allowing two hits. Holland entered the game for the final two innings to keep the Oilmen scoreless.

"My fastball was running probably six inches," said Gothrup, "It was running them out of bat."

Deardorff gave up four runs off of two hits over just two innings while walking five and striking out three Generals batters. The Oilmen's manager Tyler Zunkel pitched the final six innings as the Oilmen had a limited bench. Zunkel allowed five hits and struck out four batters.

Jaden Jackson and Jake Osteen each collected two hits for the Generals, while Boswell Connor Jerkatis and Ayden Elixson each drove in a run for the Generals.

The Generals worked out of two bases-loaded jams in the game.

Griffith improved to 7-12 on the year and continues to sit in third place in the Northern League.

"Our pitching pitched great," said Wright, "best pitching performance of the year so far."

The Generals welcome the Indiana Panthers back to Brian Jennings Field on Monday at 7 p.m.
